3rd Annual Just Transition and Good Jobs Conference

A just transition means helping those whose livelihoods are vulnerable to the policies and actions that are necessary to address climate change and pollution.

To make this happen an engaged movement of communities, workers, and allies are needed. Working together with industry and government this movement can identify those who are vulnerable and address inequities while collectively planning for the changes ahead to ensure no one is left behind.

New industries are being developed and some are being phased out. New jobs will be created and jobs will be lost. We must ensure that the shift to a clean economy is fair and equitable, that the transition is just.

Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan gave weight to the need for just transition. Organized labour and communities applied pressure for the government to implement programs supporting workers and communities. These efforts facilitated the creation the Federal Task Force on Just Transition for Canadian Coal Power Workers and Communities.

Getting Canada’s coal transitions right are important for future transitions.
